HMH Social Studies immerses students in history with programs that promote deep thought through historical perspective.

HMH Social Studies places students inside everyday moments of history and gives them the depth of knowledge and skills to construct thoughtful, informed answers.

The history of who we are and how we got here is the world’s most incredible story—filled with more drama, plot twists, and surprise endings.

HMH Social Studies presents the rich, endlessly inventive story of our world, challenging students to dig deep into the past, ask questions, uncover the connections to their world today, and prepare for tomorrow.

HMH Social Studies is one of the established core educational solutions that required an update of both the lesson content and copyright. I was the lead designer and was tasked with the marketing materials to reflect the new program’s direction. I led and worked with a small team of designers, account managers and copywriters to execute, and create the marketing assets. I focused on a clean, modern look that made sure to address the proper hierarchy. There were major design challenges in the hierarchy between the company, program, national versus state programs and middle school versus high school levels.

Developing the middle school and high school overview brochures simultaneously allowed me to learn about and build the program’s design structure, and establish the proper hierarchy in order to ensure that various types of marketing collateral—regardless of print or digital—consistently reflected the same look and field of the overall campaign.

Because of the design challenges in the hierarchy, I created and utilized MURAL to create a visual guide. MURAL is a digital workspace and visual collaboration tool that allows authorized users (sales, marketing, designers, and account and design managers) to reference, add and edit visual boards in real time to help ensure the brands consistent development.

I never give up almost to a fault; I actually learned that in the recent past, to fail. It is part of the process — better to try and fail verses not trying. I failed because I pushed too hard for something; a difficult lesson to learn but a good one. The moral of the story? It’s never too late to learn and improve.

The HMH Social Studies educational solution had a much larger digital presence than most other learning programs, and their footprint spanned all the major platforms, including websites, social media and email campaigns.

This was due to the use of Google® Expeditions with HMH Field Trips. Google’s virtual reality (VR) technology and HMH’s instructional support allows teachers to bring students closer than ever to interesting locations they would not normally be able to visit. I developed various graphics, including infographics to market the program while highlighting this key VR feature.

This expandable trifold pocket folder is a type of sampler that provides review materials and that represents a more cost effective way, by reducing the size and amount of materials to reflect a more green approach. The national version of World Geography was being marketed to South Carolina based on their request for proposal. Because only one program within the HMH Social Studies family was being marketed, a much smaller delivery system was needed. I developed a solution that could contain the required marketing materials, keep them intact during transportation, was dynamic, and that was complimentary to the branding.

Initial creative conceptual time that was spent upfront on developing a systematic graphic approach and hierarchy system on the HMH Social Studies branding was extremely beneficial in being able to apply to the various marketing collateral.
